TV Shows Revisited

A couple of nights ago I came across the E! True Hollywood Story of Soleil Moon Frye, better known as Punky Brewster. I was amazed to learn how much she’s done in addition to that show, including directing a movie at age 19. When I was a kid Punky Brewster was one of my favorite shows. I wanted to be her so bad; I even dressed up like her one year for Halloween. I know it’s now available on DVD, but I bet if I watched it I’d be rolling my eyes the whole time at how wholesome (i.e. cheesy) it was. It’s like those Benji films I enjoyed as a kid. It’s just not the same when you become an adult. Which makes me wonder how foolish the kids will feel later on about their Pokemon obsession.

Speaking of sitcoms, did anyone watch 8 Simple Rules when it first aired? I really liked it, but when John Ritter died at the beginning of Season 2, I just couldn’t watch it anymore, and strongly believed it should be cancelled. Instead it went on for a third season before it was taken off the air. I’m glad it did too because I recently came across it in syndication on WGN and begin DVRing it. They brought in James Garner to play the grandfather and David Spade to play C.J., the kids’ cousin. I’ve never been that fond of David Spade but he’s hilarious in this show! I may have not been in a place to watch the show before, but I’m glad they didn’t cancel it after all.

Kiefer Wins

I DVR’d the Emmys last night because while I find award shows boring, I knew Kiefer would be on and I could just fast forward past all the crap. I didn’t really care who won or whether I found out the results prior to watching.

So this morning I got an e-mail from Joe:

“NICOLE, I WON THESE FOR YOU!!!!!”

I couldn’t stop laughing. It’s nice to know my husband can have a sense of humor about my celebrity crushes. :)

Speaking of Kiefer, we just started watching Season 3 of 24 today and damn is it good already. They don’t waste any time!

King vs Coben

Speaking of the DVR … we had Constantine on there since April 9th! I couldn’t believe it had been waiting for us to watch it that long. I almost deleted it a few times since it was taking up so much space, but then my friend said it was good so we watched it, and she was right. A little confusing, but interesting throughout the entire film which is what matters most.

We also watched two episodes of Nightmares and Dreamscapes. It’s an eight episode series adapted from Stephen King’s book of short stories of the same name. So far I’m not impressed. The only one I really felt was worth my time was the first one, Battleground. A hitman kills a guy who owns a toy factory and the next day receives a package from said toy factory containing toy soldiers who come to life and try to kill him. The effects of the army men when the camera got down on their level was cool. I think they used real actors painted green for those shots but I’m not sure.

There’s also a Stephen King made for tv movie called Desperation on there too that Joe recorded. I think I am over Stephen King. I liked his older stuff but haven’t enjoyed any of his books from the past 10 years now.

The author I’m really into now is Harlan Coben. I don’t think this guy can write a bad book. I’ve read four now and they are always so good! The general story lines are the same – someone is hiding a big secret from their family member, friends and family get into trouble, disappear, or are killed, etc. There are more twists and turns than you know what to do with, right up to the very last page of each book. I end up reading a book in two or three days because I just can’t put it down. I’ve been up past midnight a few nights already which I haven’t done for so long. Probably not since I was into Stephen King’s older work. I think Coben’s books would make good movies depending on the director.

LCD TV

Ever since we bought the plasma tv last year, we haven’t had a good tv to play video games on. Joe has been putting a 19″ tv in front of the fireplace and using that from time to time which clutters the living room, not to mention sucks as far as picture quality goes. We had been mulling over buying an LCD TV strictly for gaming but they aren’t cheap. The least expensive one in an acceptable size was a Polaroid 32″ LCD HDTV that Circuit City normally sells for $999. We looked at it last weekend and Joe read reviews about it on their website but we really couldn’t decide. Until this morning, that is, when Joe opened up their ad in the Sunday paper and saw it was on sale for $899. We headed straight to the store and then spent a good hour or so going from store to store looking for a decent tv stand under $100 for it. We finally found a nice stand at Value City of all places. It was a stand I had been looking at on Walmart’s website that they didn’t have in the store. It cost a bit more, but only by $5 after factoring in the shipping charges we would have had to pay. So now we have a kickass gaming station upstairs in our loft. The only thing that stinks is the space isn’t laid out too well (here’s our current setup) so there’s nowhere good to put the leather chair that was up there so you can sit on it while playing. I think we should put it in storage for the time being and get a bean bag chair or something. I swear, that’s it for furniture. I’m starting to feel like it’s getting a bit too crowded in here as it is.

Clothes, games, and things

Other than an argument with my brother, Friday was a nice day despite the shitty weather (damn it is cold for being May). We took advantage of having the day off by running some errands. Our first stop was the Secretary of State office to renew my license plate sticker. Man, the lady who took care of me couldn’t have been more unfriendly. In fact, not a person working there looked the least bit happy. What is the deal with that? You’d think those people would be thankful they have a (local) government job since they typically pay much better than average. I know I would. Are the “customers” that nasty that these people can’t smile to the ones who are friendly? I think the word of the month is going to be hostile, since I’ve been sensing a lot of hostility in people as of late. Maybe it’s the whole change in seasons, I don’t know.

I decided the other day that come hell or high water I was getting some new clothes. It’s difficult for me to shop for clothes because I hate trying stuff on. I usually grab as many things as possible to take to the dressing room since after one round of trying things on I’m done. We hit a bunch of stores in the mall and I ended up with three new shirts and two necklaces. No pants like I was hoping though. I even tried on a pair of jeans in the same size and style I already own and even those didn’t fit properly, so I give up for now. It’s just too damn frustrating. I guess I’m going to have to work off these hips so I can fit into pants that don’t have lycra in them.

It started getting crowded in the mall around lunchtime (I was surprised at how many school-aged kids were there), so we left and grabbed McDonald’s for lunch (I had a salad) and a movie from Blockbuster. After watching some trash tv (Jerry Springer, People’s Court), we went upstairs and worked out while watching two episodes from Season 2 of 24. After working out for an hour, we brought the dvd downstairs and watched two more episodes, making it a total of four episodes watched back to back. I love that show! We have Season 1 too, but we didn’t get it until after Season 2, so we’re not really watching in order, but oh well, it’s still very interesting. We’re even getting pretty good at predicting who the bad guys are and what’s going to happen. It’s a lot of fun!

After our mini 24 marathon, we watched the movie we rented, Melinda and Melinda. Man, that was bad, no wonder I had never heard of it. I guess I should have picked up Just For Laughs instead but I was afraid all the material would be stuff I’ve seen before on Comedy Central. I wasn’t expecting the movie to suck so much since one of my favorite actors, Will Ferrell, is in it, but I’ve come to find I don’t really care for Woody Allen films at all.

Good things that came in the mail recently:
My $75 check from the magazine that published my photos.
An old school board game, Aggravation, that we won on ebay for the game night I’m hosting. (It smells like old people, but that’s ok!)

Oh and we also bought this trivia game at Target the other night. Not sure how good it is, but for $10 I don’t care. I’m sure Joe will kick my ass at it anyway since he’s the pop culture king.
