Blinds and Kitties

We didn’t do anything terribly exciting this weekend, but it was productive. We got a lot of errands done, including finally ordering new vertical blinds for the dining room. We’ve been wanting to replace them ever since we moved in.

One of the other things we did was torture ourselves. Or at least I tortured myself by dragging Joe to two different pet shops to look at animals we can’t get. I must be insane, right? I just can’t help it; I want a cute and cuddly pet! On Saturday we played with these cute ferrets at the Petco and this morning we saw the cats up for adoption at PetSmart. There were so many adorable cats ranging in ages from five months to two years old. There were at least four I would have easily taken home if I could. One was a black and white male who was full of energy, trying to swat at me whenever he could. Two were beautiful grey darlings who enjoyed licking my fingers. One was a white and tan longhair who was incredibly fluffy.

*Sigh* I love kitties!

Prickly

Yesterday we went to a reptile swap to check out some hedgehogs. We’ve been mulling over the idea of getting one for over a month now. We’ve done research online, I’ve read books, and we trolled pet stores. Only one small mom and pop store had them, and the girl there recommended the swap because there are breeders there that have young hedgehogs. There were actually three booths that were selling them, and we got to hold some from two of them. They were a lot friendlier than I was expecting. Very cute too.

The only thing that’s preventing me from making a decision is the initial cost (a good $70 for the hedgehog alone plus another $100 or so for supplies) and the lack of an ideal place for the cage in our home. Hedgehogs require plenty of sunlight and a room temperature of about 70 degrees which is higher than the thermostat setting during the day while we’re at work or at night when we’re sleeping. There’s heating pads and whatnot that can be bought, but it’s another added expense. And when you come right down to it, a hedgehog still isn’t a cat or dog. So I’m torn. I want a pet, but I’m not sure I want the responsibility that goes along with it. I remember what a pain cleaning my hamsters’ cages were. At least with a cat the fun of having one around would outweigh the work. I’m not so sure the same could be said for a hedgehog even though they are really really cute. We’re limited in the type of pets we can have until Joe’s son is older, so a cat is out of the question.

Later in the evening we went to my parents’ to hang out and play games. We didn’t get home til midnight and I was exhausted. It was quite a busy day! We haven’t done anything today, which feels like a waste of a perfectly good day away from work. It’s snowing outside and Joe is working on installing the new faucets we bought for the downstairs and kids’ bathrooms. We’ll probably run out to Home Depot, Target, and Walgreens in a bit. Sundays just have an overall depressing feel to them. I wish every day was Saturday.

Zoo & IMAX

We both took a vacation day from work today so we could see the last ever (in this area, anyway) afternoon showing of Sharks 3D at the IMAX. I think the girl made a mistake in our favor and didn’t charge us enough for the tickets, though. I didn’t see any movie prices for $6 except child/senior, but that’s what our tickets cost. Score!

Anyway, the movie was really cool even though it was only 45 minutes long. I love nature films, and when they are in 3D, they are even cooler. I especially liked the part where it felt like you were in a sea of jellyfish swimming all around you.

Since I had acquired two free passes that expired today, we went to the zoo in the morning. I almost thought we weren’t going to be able to go because at 5:30 am there was a huge thunderstorm, but by the time we got up at 7:30, it was clear blue skies.

The zoo was a lot more crowded than we were expecting for a Thursday, but it wasn’t horrible. The weather was really hot and humid, but I got a lot of nice photos, so it was worth it.

Since we had time to kill between the zoo and the movie, we drove around the area and stumbled upon the location of the Lisle Eyes to the Skies Balloon Festival. It wasn’t open yet, but since we plan on going on Saturday to see the balloon launch, it was good to know the area a bit.

We also stopped at Starbucks to try the new Mint Mocha Frappachino and let me just say that it is delicious! I think I’m going to have issues this summer trying not to drink one every day. ;)

After the movie, we went to Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner. We have seen them around lately, so we decided to give it a try. Their food was ok; nothing really to write home about. We got an order of their boneless chicken wings, but I wasn’t very fond of them. I prefer the wings at Hooters.

After dinner we went to Old Navy to look for some shorts and jeans. Joe found a pair of shorts he liked, but I wasn’t so lucky. I did come home with two more tank tops to add to my collection, however! One is purple and the other is royal blue.

It was a long and fun day. Back to work tomorrow, though, so I should get to bed!

Poo Zoo & Other Adventures

We were quite busy yesterday, but the day managed to still stretch out before us, which is always a nice feeling.

We got up fairly early to make a quick trip to Walmart before all the freaks showed up. I tried on some jeans, but the sizes do not make sense to me. I couldn’t even fit into a 13 (they have odd sizes in this one brand), yet I ended up with two pairs of cotton shorts, one of them a size 4/6. Explain that! Ok, I will. It’s my hips. I actually have a fairly small waist. So I made sure to work out again last night. I need to slim down before October!

After Walmart, we headed over to Cantigy Park with cameras in hand. It was a bit hazy outside, but the sky was becoming more blue, so we took our chances. Since there’s a $7 charge per car, we didn’t want to pay for nothing. Luckily we did get some fairly decent photographs. I got a bit of sunburn on my shoulders too. It was so hot and humid by the time we left around 11:30 am.

Dust and turtles

Work dragged today because there wasn’t anything to work on due to a system problem. Of course, we had to sit around all day in case the problem was resolved, so I had a lot of time on my hands to surf. You know, the internet gets pretty boring after a couple of hours. I did find some cool places to go during the summer, though, so it wasn’t a complete waste of eight hours.

I also visited a local nature center during my lunch break. They have a little turtle pond and one of their turtles seems to be dying. He was underwater (including his neck), floating at an angle, not moving. I let an employee there know, and she fished him out with a net and placed him on a rock. He was barely moving, and I suspect he’s sick. I warned her he could contaminate the pond and cause the other turtles to get sick, but I’m not sure if she took me seriously.

I got really annoyed with my camera too (the Nikon 2100 I carry in my purse, not the Canon) because the macro mode rather sucks. The camera kept focusing on the background when I was trying to get a photo of a flower. I really wish I could make some decent money selling my two old Nikons and buy a Canon Powershot with the money.
