Blah-day

That’s what I call Monday. I noticed my mood improves as the week goes on. Hardly a shocker, I’m sure.

We finally watched the last three episodes of Prison Break this weekend. We always procrastinate watching it but then it sucks us in. I’m not sure if I can stop from tuning in next year even though I kinda want to. I’m just tired of feeling obligated to watch shows instead of truly looking forward to them. One in particular is Hell’s Kitchen. I watched the first episode of this recent season and then I deleted the series recording before I got sucked in. I have movies on the DVR I need to watch and when it gets past 50% full I feel all panicky! I really should delete the MadTV and SNL series too since they totally suck, but once in awhile there’s a good skit so I don’t.

Joe is practicing Yankee Doodle and Jingle Bells on his guitar at the moment. He just started taking lessons two weeks ago. I’m hoping he’ll learn a Cure song eventually. Speaking of, Happy Birthday to Robert Smith today.

Time to make dinner.

Earthquake

I woke up this morning at 4:40 am with a start and attempted to swat Joe because the bed was swaying and it was annoying me. Except Joe wasn’t in bed; he was still downstairs from having stayed up most of the night playing games and watching tv (he has the day off from work today). I laid really still thinking maybe I somehow shook the bed, but it continued to move on it’s own accord. It was freaky.

So I jumped out of bed, met Joe on his way up the stairs (finally coming to bed), and asked him if he felt that. He had no idea what I was talking about, so I told him what happened. His response? “It was probably from a plane passing overhead”. Uh, I don’t think so, buddy. Planes pass overhead all the time and they don’t make the bed sway. So then he told me it was probably a train. Wrong again, bucko. There’s a difference between the rumbling we sometimes feel from the train and the bed moving back and forth as if something was underneath it. By this point he was exasperated with me because he just wanted to go to sleep so he told me I must have been dreaming. Grrr! I gave up and got ready for work.

The second I got to work someone asked me if I felt the earthquake. I was like, “Thank you! I knew I wasn’t nuts!” I immediately called Joe (and woke him up, muhaha) to gloat. Don’t ever insinuate I’m crazy, hon! I know when something isn’t right. And what an odd feeling that was. I can’t imagine how a big earthquake would feel. I hope to never find out.

Sunday Bloody Sunday

We got a new aquarium for Oreo (a 20-gallon long) at the Petland in Bolingbrook this morning and afterwards headed across the street to the fairly new outdoor mall, The Promenade. We were there last summer before most of the shops opened and had lunch at Johnny Rocket’s. Since then they’ve opened more stores but I guess we just weren’t in the mood to shop because we walked the length of the space, checked out the Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World (lame for people like us who aren’t into fishing, hunting or camping) and decided to head back home.

After a quick trip to Target, Joe washed my car inside and out and I tried to not fall asleep on the couch while I finished the book I’ve been reading.

God, I really hate Sundays. The second I wake up I’m already mourning the loss of my weekend. Plus I slept too late again so my schedule is all screwed up. Can’t we just win the lottery and forget all this working bullshit?

Fun day

What a beautiful Spring day in Chi-Town! It has been a long time coming.

We woke up a little later than we planned because we went to bed too late last night. Well, I went to bed at midnight but someone was up until 3 am playing Warcraft.

I hit snooze one too many times this morning because I’m really loving our new mattress. Plus I got a pillow wedge last night to help elevate my head (I cannot sleep completely flat) and that made things even more comfortable.

We hit the animal show a little later than planned thanks to the snooze-fest and stopping at Dunkin Donuts first for a quick bite to eat. The show was interesting even though we didn’t buy anything. I was surprised no one had any hamsters or ferrets. There were a ton of reptiles and rats, though. And this one breeder had sugar gliders. I would have never even considered one for a pet until I saw them in person. I’m glad they were $200 each or we might have bought one on impulse which after reading this site would have been a huge mistake. They were adorable, though, and I enjoyed interacting with them.

We decided not to let the gorgeous weather go to waste, so we parked in downtown Wheaton (a beautiful nearby town) and visited the little shops. We ended up grabbing lunch at a place called Shane’s Deli. I got a cup of potato soup and half a turkey sandwich with avocado. Joe had an Italian sub which was yummy too.

After walking around a bit more and getting ice cream at another shop, we headed back to the car and drove to the mall so we could take back a few items and use my Sears gift card to get Smarty Pants for the Wii.

Hot Topic had these cute things called Skel Animals but none of the plush ones they carried were black which is what I wanted. Ah well.

I’m going to veg in front of the tv, computer and Wii now. ;)

The carny and the mattress

I’m so tired right now since we spent most of the day running around.

We had a very strange cashier at the Walmart this morning. I felt like we were on a game show. She never stopped talking and it wasn’t just to us. Some of the things she did was…

… greet us with “good morning, let’s do this!”
… count the number of items as she scanned them
… talk to the items as she bagged them (“this will go in this way, now you go in there, don’t give me a hard time”)
… spin the carousel of bags and count down as Joe grabbed each one

She was extremely energetic and would make a perfect carny, but as a cashier she just made me uneasy. Where do they find these people? Don’t get me wrong, she was really friendly, but there was definitely something off. The whole experience was one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever experienced. Once we got out to the car, Joe told me he felt like yelling, “No whammies, no whammies!”

We’ve been talking about getting a new mattress for probably two years now and we finally did it. What a relief! We looked at Carson Pirie Scott’s home store first since we donated to their Goodwill program and got coupons in exchange, but the sales woman pissed me off. I told her I wasn’t interested in a pillow-top mattress and instead of showing me the non-pillow-tops, she instead insulted my intelligence. I don’t appreciate that shit and I also don’t buy from people like that.

We ended up getting a mattress from Back to Bed instead. And ironically, we chose a pillow-top. Once we realized from talking to their non-insulting salesman that they no longer make mattresses that you can flip (pillow-top or not), we decided we liked that kind more because it’s softer.

Guess we’ve been out of the mattress-buying loop since the one we have is seven years old. It was a good deal at the time – $400 – which was a lot when I was paying for it myself (Joe was with me when I bought it but we had just started dating). Over the past year we’ve spent a lot of time testing out mattresses and seriously, we could have hemmed and hawed forever. Who really knows how the bed is going to be until they get it home and sleep on it? So today we decided to say fuck it and just go with our gut.

I think we made the right decision. I hope we did. I guess if the pillow-top ends up sucking at least we’ll know from first-hand experience. The nice thing is the model we got is nicer than the one we saw at Carson’s and cost the same. Plus we got a free mattress protector. Instead of waiting to have it delivered, we picked it up from the warehouse right away.

I’m hoping to sleep quite well tonight.
