Fridays after work are the best

Yesterday Joe took the day off work. I could not because I’m already behind thanks to this audit we were under all last week and much of this past week.

One of the many things I like about Joe is I don’t have to nag him to get things done around the house. In fact, it was his idea to use some of the day to remove the water softener in the laundry room. Soon after we moved in we were bypassing it because you cannot wash shampoo out of your hair with it running. Honestly, it’s terrible. The water feels slimy and disgusting so we stopped using it. It’s been in the way of completing the new flooring and paint job in the laundry room too, so he spent a few hours yesterday morning removing it. I must say I’m impressed how he soldered the joints of the new piping together. It looks good! Plus I did laundry last night and there weren’t any leaks. Way to go, Joe! He also vacuumed which was nice. Then he watched tv until I got home because he was bored. Too cute.

After work we ran out to return Let’s Go To Prison (it was ok) and finally got a copy of Flushed Away. Of course it would be available the weekend we don’t have the kids. We’ve only been looking since it was released! We might have to make a copy (shhh) so they can watch it next weekend. I almost bought it at Target last week but I’m so over buying DVDs at the moment. They just take up too much space and I rarely pull them out and watch them again. Who needs to when they are on the movie channels constantly?

We also hit the produce market which we haven’t been to in forever. I got all sorts of yummy stuff like onions, tomatoes, limes, and lunch-meat. There’s a pizza place next door and once we got a whiff of that we discarded our plans for me to make tacos and went to another pizza place, Lou Malnatis, and ordered a deep dish pizza. We had a half hour wait so we checked out used games at Game Crazy but they didn’t have anything good. Then we bought junk food at Dominick’s. Seriously, how could I ever hope to be as thin as I want when I love food so much? I swear, almost nothing makes me more content than buying food, or bringing home that delicious deep dish pizza. In fact, I think I’m going to finish the leftovers right now. My mouth is watering at the thought.

Are you ready for some baseball?

White Sox Tickets On the way home from work, Joe stopped at the White Sox box-office to buy tickets with the gift card he had been given for Christmas.

The story goes, he plunked down his card at the window and told the woman, “I want two tickets for the best seats $50 can buy”. Her response, “do you have somebody to go with?” Oh no she just didn’t! I think she was hitting on my man. But who could blame her? He is hawt!

Anyway, I had printed out a schedule for dear hubby and highlighted which games I’d be willing to attend based on these three factors:

1) Possible weather – As in no more games in the month of May. You’d think “May is nice. It’s getting warm but it’s not too hot”. Wrong. May sucks. It’s cold and windy, particularly if you happen to be at a Cubs game with that breeze off the lake. Plus does Wrigley Field have the worst hot chocolate ever or what? I could get better shit from a pouch. I throw up a little in my mouth just thinking about it. Which is why we’re going to a White Sox game. They are the better team, after all.

2) Day of week – As in no more weeknight games, particularly in the month of May (what is with that month??). Who wants to get off from a stressful day of work only to fight hellish traffic, sit under bright lights, drive home after 10 pm and go to work the next day? Not I. Been there, done that. I may sound old here, but I do have a bedtime you know.

3) Kids free weekend – Is it bad that I want to go to a game with my husband alone? The kids have been to games with their mom and step-dad so I don’t feel too guilty about it. Plus they aren’t the outdoorsy types. They’d be happier at home in front of a Playstation or Gamecube.

So while I won’t tell you which exact game we’ll be attending (I don’t want to encourage you stalker types), I will say it’s during a warm month on a Saturday afternoon and I’m looking forward to it.

Slurpees, shopping, and vitamin D

Commercials don’t seem to affect me as much as things people write in their blogs. For instance, this afternoon I got a powerful craving for a 7-Eleven Slurpee after someone mentioned they have Crystal Light slurpees there. I can’t tell you the last time I even thought of slurpees or wanted one, but suddenly I couldn’t think of anything tastier. Of course my mean husband wouldn’t go out and get me one. How dare he deny me! He said “let’s go tomorrow”. Yea, like I’m going to want one then.

I have this sudden inexplicable urge to spend money. I’ve been tempted to go online and buy stuff for no real reason. Mostly CDs and games for my DS. I guess after not spending money for so long I feel the need for some retail therapy. It’s so weird. Sometimes just adding stuff to my cart is enough, however. Then I decide I don’t want said item so much after all. No harm, no foul.

Speaking of online shopping, today I went to Old Navy’s site because I wanted more tank tops, but guess what? They have over 20 different tank top styles and not one of them are the “perfect fit” that I own and like. No, they have a bazillion of those stupid long tanks for super skinny bitches but none for the average woman. Look Old Navy, women have curves. Only teenage girls or women built like boys can pull of that long tank top look without the fat bursting out the sides. How dare you cut out a good chunk of your customers in the name of “fashion”. You know what fashion is to me? Being comfortable and not squeezing into clothes just so I can look like everyone else.

This is weird. I started taking Vitamin D supplements last year because I heard it helps with depression, particularly in the winter months. Well, at first it did seem to help. Then my mom gave me some vitamin D she didn’t want anymore, and because it was going to expire before mine, I starting taking hers to use it up first. Well I didn’t feel as good then. Now that they ran out last week and I’m back to mine, I feel better again. How weird is that? I didn’t think to look at the dosage so maybe mine is higher. I just know with the incredible pressure I’m under at work I would have normally had a breakdown by now and I’m taking it (mostly) in stride. I can’t see any reason for this other than the vitamin D. Oh and if you’ve ever contemplated taking vitamins, I highly suggest it. I also take a multi vitamin every day going on as few years now and I have not had one cold. I used to get sick all the time so it really does make a difference! That and a yearly flu shot.

Have you seen that show, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? It’s fun to watch, yet kind of sad how many questions I didn’t know the answers to. I thought for sure it would be easy. The thing is, it’s not that any of those kids are smarter than the adults, it’s just that the knowledge is still fresh in their young little minds. There’s a lot of truth in the saying, “use it or lose it”. I did notice that if I stuck with the first answer that came to mind instead of analyzing it to death, 8 times out of 10 I was correct. So the knowledge must still be there tucked back into the far recess of my subconscious.

DST, baby!

It’s that time of the year again. Well, actually it’s earlier this year, but in any case, it’s that time when people far and wide bitch and moan about the whole hour (*rolls eyes*) they lost thanks to Daylight Saving Time. Well suck it up, bitches, because I love it! LOVE IT! I have been waiting for this in anticipation. I’m more than willing to give up an hour of my day to have more sunshine when I get off work. And can I say how glad I am that DST has been permanently extended by three weeks? I am in my glory! Hell, I even changed the alarm clock this morning so we’re not running behind tomorrow.

Bring on the sunshine! Woo-hoo!

New library

Yesterday we registered at the new and improved Wheaton library. They just expanded it and re-opened to the public less than a month ago. The main reason we decided to sign up is after taking a little self-guided tour, it looks like a really nice place to take the kids when they are visiting. Since it’s a little further away, we probably won’t use it as our main library, but will borrow CDs and other materials we can’t find at ours.

Let me tell you, the library is huge inside! I haven’t been to a larger library since visiting the Harold Washington library in Chicago. There are three levels with books as far as the eye can see and they have a very respectable audio/visual section.

The entire lower level of the library is all kids’ stuff. The most interesting thing we found was the bank of computers pre-loaded with educational software. There are two tables with six computers each. One table is for preschool and kindergarten aged children and the other table is for 1st-5th graders. They also have a ton of computer software that can be checked out. All the shelves are kid-height which is not only logical, but really cute. They keep the books geared toward the youngest children closest to the entrance which makes sense since those kids usually have to be carried or pushed in a stroller.

Everything in the library is organized well with plenty of places to sit and relax with a good book. Even the lighting changes depending on the area. The kids’ area is brighter than the adults’, yet the lighting is thoughtfully reduced in the computer areas. I love that they thought of everything! Kudos to whomever designed the layout of the library. Now if only someone could re-design their awful website!
