iPhone update & pet stuff

So it’s been just over a month since I got my iPhone and the novelty is beginning to wear off a bit, thank god. Because I really was spending way too much time using it! Now I am back to reading during my lunch break instead of screwing around on my phone and I feel smarter already. ;)

I think the one thing the iPhone has afforded me is more time to keep in touch with friends without being tied to my computer. Last thing I want after working at a computer all day is to be in front of mine at home. There are days where I don’t have to boot up at all. It’s a beautiful thing! Between Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook, I can keep on top of what everyone is up to but still have time to relax. Although I must admit the evenings just fly by. I don’t even know what I’m doing since it’s not cooking healthy meals or working out, two things I SHOULD be doing daily. When the Fall shows begin I’m going to be even a bigger lazy ass if that’s possible.

Is it bad that I don’t want my pets anymore? Don’t worry, I won’t be getting rid of them, because that’s irresponsible, but the work to keep their cages clean is completely out of proportion to the joy they bring. In other words, I am finding them to be more trouble than they are worth and when they go to the hamster wheel and sewer (lol, just kidding) in the sky, that’s it. I’m holding out for a cat.

The rats especially make me question what I was thinking. They are much better than a hamster in that you can actually interact with them, but there’s no good place for their cage and I feel bad that they don’t have a bigger one. In addition, after Joe shampooed our carpeting we don’t want them running around on it anymore so I have to lay out a blanket and surround it with the makeshift wall we created from some boxes. That makes it difficult to interact with them. And even worse is that for whatever reason they are making my house smell like mothballs which is seriously annoying me. I can’t figure out if it’s the litter I’m using (Yesterday’s News) or just them. I have a brand new bag of litter to go through and after that I’m going to see if the smell gets better.

Oh and on top of that, I feel like my breathing has been getting weird lately. It almost feels like I’m developing asthma. If it gets any worse I might just have to find them another home but we’ll see if it comes to that. As much as they annoy me, I think I’d be upset if I got rid of them because they are like relatives – you love them but don’t really like them. That is how I am feeling about the rodents in this house lately.

  1. And that is why I will never allow any animal except dogs* in my house – pets like that aren’t as much fun as they are work. But good for you for not getting rid of them, nothing makes me more angry that people who think that pets are disposable. Maybe you could put an ad online, or in the paper, to see if anyone would want to adopt them from you? That way you’d be giving someone a pet, not abandoning them?

*Cats would be ok too, I just don’t really like them that much.

  2. I don’t think I’d feel right asking someone else to adopt them – I’d be worried whether they were treated right. At least with me I know they will be well fed, have a clean home, and get to run around frequently. So even though they are a hassle, I will deal. Plus it really annoys me when these people post their pets on Craigslist insisting the person has to promise not to get rid of the animal. It has to be a “lifetime commitment” they write, yet they are hypocrites for not staying committed themselves. I’m not going to be like those people. I made the decision to adopt these pets, I will honor that responsibility. Unless the health thing becomes an issue, but I’m hoping not because I really don’t like not knowing what might happen to them. And it’s not like I could get a cat right now, or I would have. So they were my consolation prize I guess. LOL! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate them, I just don’t think I’ll be getting any more rodents for a long time, if ever again. The smell is really starting to get to me and I’m cleaning their cages two to three times a week. :p

  3. I don’t know about where you live, but here there are small animal rescue groups that will take pocekt pets and find homes for them through stringent screening processes. If it comes to that…

I’m still cool with my guineas, but feel bad that I don’t feel like I spend enough time with them some days. It’s great having a huge cage, but when I cleaned it the other night, I filled 2 garbage bags with bedding, hays, and poopy pellets.
